Stepping Stones Center | Touching Ancient Winds, Embracing a Child’s World

This week at Stepping Stones Center was marked by an extraordinary journey through time and culture, alongside deeply moving moments of emotional clarity and quiet reflection. Where do adults go to ground their emotions? Where do children hide their boundless imaginations? We captured these shining moments to share with you.

A Letter from a Dunhuang Elf

When the ancient artistic sanctuary of the desert was brought directly into the classroom, our younger children embarked on a magical cultural adventure.

“Dear little ones, I am a Dunhuang elf from over a thousand years ago…” With the opening of this mysterious invitation, story-filled murals and dancing Apsaras unfolded before their eyes. Listening to the tales of ancient master artisans, the children’s eyes lit up with wonder and a longing for far-off lands.

Inspired by the exquisite murals and sculptures, the teacher posed an interactive prompt: “Little designers, what will you create?” The children eagerly picked up their brushes, bringing to life their vision of mystical Apsaras, the Nine-Colored Deer, and even imagined future worlds.

Through this playful creative process, the vast Silk Road transformed into tangible lines and vibrant colors, quietly planting the seeds of ancient traditional culture in young hearts.

Turning Shouts into Embraces

Meanwhile, at our positive parenting workshop, “Walking Together, Waiting for the Flower to Bloom” parents underwent a powerful journey of emotional awakening.

During the session, parents participated in a role-playing exercise titled “An Adult’s Rage, A Child’s World”. By standing on chairs to simulate a towering presence — and looking down from the vulnerable perspective of a helpless child — parents experienced firsthand the fear and avoidance triggered by harsh yelling and pressure. In an instant, the traditional authoritarian stance gave way to profound empathy and self-reflection.

Understanding the intense survival pressure faced by migrant families, social workers introduced the Cognitive Behavioral ABC Model to deconstruct the irrational belief that “a disobedient child equals a ruined future”. Parents not only learned the mechanics behind their emotional triggers, but also mastered the “Positive Time-Out” technique to reset an overwhelmed mind.

In the final practice session, parents diligently worked on shifting accusatory “You” statements into caring, vulnerable “I” messages. In that moment, the adults shed their tight anxieties, using gentle self-reinvention to bring a long-overdue sense of ease to their relationships with their children.

From the sweeping lines of Dunhuang murals to the mindful deep breaths in our parenting workshop; from the uninhibited artistic creations of our children to the patient, reflective gazes of our adults — this week at Stepping Stones Center was a lesson in gentle connection. The adults learned to approach parenthood with soft grace, while the children explored the world with wild freedom.

We record these moments with gratitude, and look forward to seeing you next week.
