A New Semester Begins | We Lay the Stones, and Wait for the Wind

Set Sail for a New Semester & Gather Strength for the Journey Ahead!

As summer slips away, a new semester begins.

May every child carry love in their heart as they set out toward the horizons that await them.

When Summer Leaves Its Stories to the Cicadas

The September breeze carries away the last warmth of summer and turns the page to a new chapter. We often think of the start of a new school year as a moment filled with ritual. It is a time to say goodbye, but also a time to set out once again. Every summer at Stepping Stones, we watch children grow, reaching upward like young trees. And every autumn, we prepare to welcome new beginnings. In this vast city, the start of a school year is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a quiet prelude to countless small stories — moments when the course of a young life may begin to change.

That Quiet, Unassuming Resilience

Over the past few semesters, we have witnessed countless moments like these in our classrooms. A child lowers their head to copy what is written on the board. They may not understand everything yet, but they carefully write down every letter. Another child hesitates for a long time before finally raising their hand and quietly saying, “Teacher, I’ll give it a try.” These moments may seem ordinary. But every now and then, you see their eyes light up. And somehow, that little spark can be more powerful than any grand speech or carefully planned lesson.

The Words Left Unspoken

When we first stepped into the classroom, we thought we were there to teach English, digital literacy, and social-emotional learning courses. But after spending enough time standing in front of a classroom, we began to realise that perhaps it was never quite that simple. Sometimes, it is a child saying, “Teacher, thank you for all your hard work!” that catches you completely off guard. Sometimes, it is the seriousness and sincerity with which they approach the world that quietly eases some of the restlessness we carry with us.

The world is shaping them in its own way. But we have come to realise, just as clearly, that they are shaping us too — in their own way, little by little.

Even If It Means One More Choice

As the new semester begins, we do not expect dramatic changes. We simply hope that, along the road ahead, we can help make the journey a little smoother. We hope shy children will find the courage to raise their hands. We hope children who could not find the right answer today will get one more answer right tomorrow. We hope that, even if all we do is help them learn a few more words, those words might open a new door for them. May every child take a few more confident steps along the path we help build — with steadier feet and a brighter heart.

Every small step matters. Every small act of care can help a child move forward with a little more confidence and see the world with a little more hope.

This new semester, we’ll keep laying stones at Stepping Stones — one by one, creating a steadier path for children to follow.

We’ll be here, waiting for them.

And we’ll be waiting for you to join us.
