At 4:30 p.m., the school bell rings.
Some children are quickly picked up by their parents; others return to quiet, empty homes.
However, at Stepping Stones Center, the most vibrant part of the day is just beginning.
Open the bright glass door of the center, and this is what you’ll find:

Around long tables, volunteers and children read English together in soft voices. Fingers trace each line, following the words with care, pausing now and then for a gentle correction or a shared smile.
Across the room, a volunteer bends over a workbook, offering patient guidance. The children stay focused, heads down and hands steady, filling each page with neat, thoughtful writing.

In the homework corner, a quiet rhythm settles in – a soft hum of concentration.
Nearby, a few children sit in a small circle. One tilts his head, posing a riddle; another rests his chin in his hands, thinking it through. When the answer comes, light laughter ripples through the group.
At another table, careful hands fold bright sheets of paper, creasing and shaping them into little boats or delicate paper cranes.
The whole room feels calm and warm. Everyone is absorbed in their own task, yet no one feels alone.

After-school care isn’t about filling extra hours – it’s about filling them with connection.
At Stepping Stones Center, we don’t aim to impress. We simply want to offer a safe, welcoming space during the time between school dismissal and parents returning home – a place where children feel supported, seen, and cared for.
Homework help is always within reach. English becomes something to explore together. And friendship is never far away.
